Fern are beautiful to look at. They have something archaic to them which is no wonder since they have been around for quite a while. Their scientific name sounds prehistorical already (Wikipedia describes them as belonging to the pteridophyte group of plants). Who comes with a name like Pteridophyta? Obviusly someone who didn’t want people to interest themselves in plants, or be good at school. I wouldn’t want to come anywhere near a Pteridophyta. I mean is not like you would say: “hey guys, watch these pictures I made of a Pteridophyta” and they would say “oh man, I never seen such a wonderful exemplar of a Pteridophyta before“.
In spite of such a horrific name fern are as I said quite beautiful, specially when they unroll their new leaves after the winter sleep. In late autumn their leaves dry out and fall apart, that makes them look like burn ashes lying on the ground during the winter and finally in early spiring new young leaves arise. They look like a Phoenix, reborn anew from its own ashes to live again, destined to live as long as its old self.
